Passport photos near me: every option, compared

What each national chain actually charges in 2026, which have quietly stopped offering the service, and the cheaper route most people don't know about — a passport photo is just a photo print, and a 4×6 print costs about 0.19.

Stores that no longer do passport photos

  • Costco — Costco closed its in-store photo departments in February 2021 and shut its remaining online photo service on 28 January 2023.
  • Target — Target closed every in-store Photo Center in January 2022 and has not brought passport photos back.

Why the counter costs $17 and a print costs 39¢

You are paying for the person who takes the picture and checks it, not for the paper. If you are willing to take the photo yourself — and the State Department explicitly allows a friend or family member to do it — the only cost left is the print. Our tool measures your face, crops to the official size, replaces the background and checks the result, then hands you a 4×6 sheet holding six photos. Take that to any photo counter and pay for one ordinary print.

Prices checked August 2026 and re-verified monthly. See each store's page for the exact steps.

Common questions

Where is the cheapest place to get a passport photo near me?

Of the national chains that still photograph you at the counter, Walmart is cheapest at $7.64, then USPS at $15, FedEx at $15.95, and CVS and Walgreens at about $16.99. Cheaper than all of them: make the photo yourself here for free and print it as an ordinary 4x6 photo for about 0.19.

Do I have to go anywhere at all?

Only if you need a printed photo. If you are renewing a US passport online you just upload a digital file, which you can make here in about a minute. Printed photos are needed for first-time applications and for in-person appointments.

Can I use a photo I took at home?

Yes. There is no rule that a professional must take your passport photo. The State Department explicitly allows a friend or family member to take it. What matters is the size, the head position, a plain background, even lighting and photo-quality paper.

Which stores stopped doing passport photos?

Costco closed its photo centers in February 2021 and ended online photo services in January 2023. Target closed all in-store Photo Centers in January 2022 and only offers mail order now. Pages still listing those as options are out of date.

How long does it take?

Counter service is usually 5 to 15 minutes. If you print your own 4x6 sheet, drugstore same-day pickup is typically ready within an hour.
